Why do the Olympics have taekwondo?

Is it played a lot around the world?|||Since the Olympics is a world-wide event, sports from all over the world are included. Taekwondo is the national sport of Korea, and it is the most popular martial art in the world. The WTF (World Taekwondo Federation) rules make it very sport-centric, like boxing and judo. The rules are simple, it is relatively safe for the participants, and because of the high, explosive kicks it can be enjoyable to watch.

Many other martial arts are designed more for combat than for sport, and therefore could be too dangerous for a sporting event like the Olympics. That%26#039;s not to say that taekwondo can%26#039;t be used for combat, as it can be quite effective, but because of the clear rules and protective gear in taekwondo tournament sparring, it is a good fit for the Olympics.
