I am about to enter my first Taekwondo competition and am looking for any tips experienced players may have to offer? It%26#039;s WTF Taekwondo.|||Focus on your abilities and not the size of the other schools, who you are going against, the other competitor%26#039;s belt ranks, etc. Just focus on YOUR abilities and focus on what YOU can do.Try to remember everything that you learned and what it took to get you there.I would plan everything the day before. Wash your uniform, make sure all your equipment is clean , make sure all of your equipment is together( because trust me, you don%26#039;t want to get there and find out that you are missing something! Also, is you are sparring and you don%26#039;t have the right gear, you probably will be disqualified.) ,and do anything else you need to do so that you don%26#039;t need to rush in the morning because rushing causes you to be tense and nervous. Also, try to imagine any surcomstance that would cause you to be nervous and tense. Think of what you would do in that situation so that you won%26#039;t be caught off guard ( EXAMPLE: the rainy weather) . You might want to watch tapes of TKD to see what others would do or you can go on YOUTUBE and watch some videos. get there about 30 minutes early , close your eyes, and take a deep breath. Visualise yourself doing the correct things in the competition. Belive it or not, visualizing yourself doing the correct things in the competition will help you more than practicing!!! MAKE SURE YOU STRETCH before you begin because that will help you to perform at your best.
For form , make sure your stances are strong and focus on the details. Also, a strong kihap,or yell, will be VERY powerful in helping you win. I have won many times with the big help of my kihap. KEEP YOUR MIND FOCUSED THE WHOLE TIME. Be friendly to all the other competitors. That will help you loosen up.
For board breaking, make sure you pick the best tecniques for YOU. Don%26#039;t do anything to hard for you and don%26#039;t choose new tecniques at the last minute. Remember to tell yourself , right before you are going to kick , I know that I can go through this board. Use all your power into breaking the board. Have confidence in yourself.
Some options for tecniques are round house kick, side kick, front snap kick, high section round house kick, back kick, jumping front snap kick, jumping round house kick, jumping back kick, spinning kick, skipping round house kick, jumping spinning kick, jumping turning behind round house kick,ax kick, hook kick, flying side kick, 360 back kick,360 spinning kick, knife hand strike, palm strike, back fist, punch, ridge hand, and split break. you can also add a step back,a step forward, a slide back,a slide forward,or a turning behind step to your kick or tecnique.
For sparring, you need to have a plan.First, find out who you are going against.MAKE SURE YOU BOUNCE. It will make you more aware and more ready, but DON%26quot;T bounce too high. You don%26#039;t even have to go off the ground to bounce.Just get a rythem. You will probably be going against the same sex(boy for boy girl for girl). Then follow these steps:
figure out your opponent
find their favorite kicking leg
find their favorite kick
try to find out what they do right before they are going to kick so you know when it is coming
find their bouncing patern
try to make a plan and think ahead
use all your power and all your energy(sometimes, when the judges cant see you when you kick and you kihap loud enough, they will give you a point)
REMEMBER,no mater what place you get, you tried your hardest and the most important thing is to have fun!!
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!|||here is what I say - for sparring, bouncing is good. stay on the move. it will keep them guessing.
get in, and out. do your combo and get out.
move as fast (and as clean) as you can.
remember, it%26#039;s a timed event as well as points. so - if you can - give it all you got.
stretch before hand. do some LIGHT cardio. bounce. loosen up a bit. twist.
Execute moves fast, fast, fast. get in and get out.
and win! good luck!|||I know you take taekowndo, but their is never anything wrong with expanding your horizons. Try some tai chi, it would give your kicks a much looser easier swing, with internal force, backing your external, plus all the stretching in tai chi would add up with the stretching in taekwondo.|||My son was in taekwondo..he did a few competitions..theyre looking for smooth form and you should know your moves according to what belt level you are at..know em inside and out and perform them smoothly and you should be alright..they divide you up into several groups and judge each group..most everyone gets a trophy..but getting the 1st place is always nice. Its not like its you against 50 other people...good luck|||Be confident, believe in yourself, don%26#039;t be afraid to be aggressive.
Good luck!
James
