Is taekwondo a bunch of different martial arts put together or is it its own art?

When I say put together, i mean, in different arts you kick, punch, ect....in tkd, you do all of these!|||Tae Kwon Do is its own now. Like most Martial arts, it derives from another art. During the Japanese occupation of the 1930%26#039;s-1945 they practiced a lot of Shotokan and so the locals learned too, only when the occupation ended they did not want a Japanese style. So they made changes, good ones of course if taught by the correct teacher, and changed the name as they had changed some of the philosophies and forms of TKD from Shotokan. Shotokan gets its origins from TE, an Okinawan art, or Shorin Ryu.

You could technically keep going back and back because TE came to Okinawa from China and to China probably from India or Tibet. So you see my point?

SO its not a bunch, it is ONE, just one modified from one to become its own identity today.|||Taekwondo has its origins since before christ was born. It has been called many different names before. The first book of Taekwondo (then called Subak, which was changed to that name from taek kyon during the shilla dynasty) was published in the middle ages. The very first instance of Taekwondo being used is a painting on a tomb dating back to 37 BC.

While it is true that the japanese invasion may have influenced taekwondo, it has been around a LOT longer than that. The Japanese forbade all martial arts from being practiced, and when the occupation ended, people renewed taekwondo. Taekwondo is VERY much its own martial art although it does have influence from other martial arts.

The name Taekwondo originates after the war, when the masters were trying to renew the art. They could not agree on which style to use, so they combined the styles and named it tae soo do, which was changed later to taekwondo.|||tkd is a single form of martial arts developed in Korea. It incorporates all the moves you mention. I%26#039;m not sure what you%26#039;re asking. Every style of martial arts I%26#039;ve ever watched uses a combination of hand, foot, arm, leg, and body movements (in other words kicks and punches).|||It was a LONG time ago. Shilla warriors learned this form and soon people from the world said that one of their youth warriors were worth 10 soldiers. Yeah. Tkd is about 80% fighting and 20% punches. So yeah.|||Army Medic is right. Tae Kwon Do developed on its own. My girlfriend lives in Japan right now and even she knows this. There was propaganda put out during the Pacific War by the Japanese, claiming that they had invented everything. Now most people know that was all crap. Korean culture is different from Japanese or Chinese, and it is independent. I think the femwulf is just making a joke with that story.

We do not have any strikes in Judo. Now you just learned another thing. But Tae Kwon Do is an independent style. It is not MMA.|||General Choi Hong Hi who founded tkd, during his time in the army he spent alot of time doing research on korean taekkyon, karate and kung fu out of this he refined the arts and created TKD, so yeah its derived from those 3 arts

By the way havent you ever herd the saying %26quot;there is nothing new under the sun%26quot;?

*Alot of people are saying that TKD came from taekkyon, like I sayed this is partialy true, but only after the art was refined and developed and added to by General Choi did it become the TKD you know, Choi did study taekkyon, it is a seperate art and is still taught in korea somewhere so they are seperate arts*

Oh and fenrisWulf is somewhat right, if you read the wikipidea it even talks about taekkyon being a pretty crapy art, or even more of a game than anything, so im sure alot of it did come from japanese styles, but hey, like i sayed, nothing new under the sun, everyone steals from everyone else
