have already asked this question but people are more bothered that i just want my son to gain a black belt without any training or hard work. i ask simply because im curios of how long it will take. he does one hour a week, been there a couple of years and has next week his 7th belt and grades at a very high level.|||It will take a very long time. 2nd yellow belt takes month. You have to be very patient and wanting to give in time if you want to get a black belt. Earning a black belt is a good goal, but you shouldn%26#039;t base it on a date on the calender. If he trains hard, he will be rewarded. Just showing up once a week and expecting a belt at the end of the 100th lesson is what has cheapened the arts in general.|||tkd is easy but not everyone can do it. where i go their are about 11 belts before you make black belt. each cycle is roughly 8 weeks... if you test every time with no mistakes. it should take about a 1 1/2. to 2 years.|||It varies from school to school. i got my black belt in tae kwon do in just under 4 years--classes 3-4 times a week. i ate and breathed martial arts. joe rogan {UFC announcer, fear factor} got his in a little over 2 years, and then went on to have an extremely impressive amatuer career. i think he is considered a prodigy--your son certainly won%26#039;t do it in 2 if he doesn%26#039;t want any %26quot;hard work%26quot;.
you can probably expect it to take 2.5-3.5 years, and cost quite a lot of money. my test fees for black belt were about $300. that dosen%26#039;t include membership fees, equipment, tourney costs, or the over a dozen other belt tests.
by %26quot;7th belt%26quot; i am assuming you mean blue belt, which means he is well on his way, but only one class a week means it will take 1.5-2 years left {at least} going from high red to black took about 6 months of training.
in summation, this isn%26#039;t something to go into lightly. for you or your child.|||Black belt status is really not that hard to obtain if you are dedicated. It depends on where you train and how much you train. Where I come from, it takes more than 5 years (training 2 - 3 times a week) to become a black belt. For myself, I%26#039;ve been training in a different style 2-3 times a week for over 2 years and I%26#039;m presently Gokyu or 5 belts below black. That is about average in my dojo, or perhaps a little slow. We have few black belts who%26#039;ve done it in less than 5 years. I train for my personal development and growth, not to impress anyone else with my rank.
So if you want your son to have viable self defense skills, I%26#039;d suggest focusing on his technique.
Now if you want him to have that belt for his confidence or feeling of achievement, and they are perfectly valid reasons for a parent, I would find a %26#039;school%26#039; that will guarantee him advancement at a fixed rate. In reality that%26#039;s probably not dependent on his ability to do technique, but your ability to pay.
Please understand, I%26#039;m not trying to belittle that, only to clarify the options as I see them.
We had a mother %26amp; daughter come to our dojo awhile back. Both wearing black belts from such an organization. The daughter wanted to GET, her words, as many black belts as she could and wanted to know how long it would take.
We told her 3 years minimum and five was more realistic. They left muttering that we were trying take money from them. But our Dojo is only $60/month and no contracts.
Do you see the difference? Ask youself what you really want for your son, and you%26#039;re answer should be fairly clear.|||If he doesn%26#039;t train or work at it 1-2 yrs. (starting from white belt). If he studies long, hard, with his whole heart and soul, and twice as much as his classmates in the dojo it will take longer. %26quot;The answer is clear. The school that my son goes to requires him to go two times a week. They base the promotions on how much he knows, attendance, and behavior. It depends on the school. At the least he has to know all the combos and creeds. The more he goes the quicker he will progress.
